BASICS Helps Churches Help Churches
The 1200 city churches in Milwaukee are striving to overcome the crises caused by poverty and societal problems in our inner city. The 1200 suburban churches in the Milwaukee metropolitan area want to help but need direction in working together to make a difference in Milwaukee.
BASICS Brings the Community Together
B.A.S.I.C.S. (Brothers And Sisters in Christ Serving) is a Christian nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization to strengthen churches and Christian outreach ministries throughout the metropolitan area. The group supports dozens of city ministries such as local partnerships, in-prison and Re-entry ministries, community outreach events, recovery programs, youth activities and many others.
BASICS is Growing in Strength and Diversity
It is a well-established and highly regarded organization that’s been in existence for almost 20 years. It seeks to strengthen the evangelical outreach and growth of local churches as well as help alleviate poverty and other difficult social problems. By fostering cooperation and teamwork while also connecting with resources, BASICS makes each outreach effort more effective.
The organization was founded in 1996 by Arn Quakkelaar who continues as Chief Executive Officer. Gary and Laurie Hendrickson are the Co-Presidents.
From the beginning, a prime goal of BASICS has been to form partnerships between city churches and suburban churches. The result has been many helpful and practical projects to help inner city churches. BASICS has assisted more than 200 church pastors, 100 outreach ministry leaders, and has developed a network of nearly 30 urban contractors to help with construction projects.
Currently over 30 struggling or start-up ministries are being supported. Its “Ministers-to-Milwaukee” operate under BASICS or on an affiliated basis. In 2001, BASICS in Milwaukee, Inc. became the financial fiduciary agent for the ministers working in Milwaukee. Their ministries are supported through donations from churches as well as private individuals and foundations to provide for their living costs and ministry expenses through tax deductible contributions. Hundreds of volunteers are actively involved in many ways using their time, talents, treasure, touch and tears.
BASICS Has Many Partners to Meet Needs
The group partners with established Christian programs in the city. Examples include:
Over the past 20 years, the metropolitan area of Milwaukee has been in crisis. Needs of impoverished/invisible people were not being met, many have been victimized by social abuses. The primary institutions of urban recovery were fatigued or even at the point of collapse.
BASICS was founded to mobilize, collaborate and work with faith-based ministries to meet the personal, spiritual, physical and economic needs of Milwaukee-area people. The goal is to strengthen the overall Milwaukee Christian community by demonstrating the love of Jesus Christ to those who are poor and in need of a caring friend.
