"Human Trafficking Today"
Discipleship
We at BASICS are following Christ’s command to “go and make
disciples…teaching them to obey everything I have commanded
you.” (Matthew 28: 19 & 20)
This is my our third year working with inner city, middle-school
BOYS in the highest crime rate police district, all of whom are
African-American and nearly every one without a father in the
home. I am teaching about Christ, Biblical truths, and how to live as
a Christian, but I am also coaching about how to live in this culture
as responsible and respectable citizens. I am "providing parenting"
to children whose one parent is often at work when the kids are
home from school. In addition, with my wife and daughters’ help,
we are taking the young people to events such as Bucks and
Brewers games, as well as, on field trips to places such as the
Milwaukee Public Museum and the art museum.
However, MANY times the middle school GIRLS have asked me:
“When are you going to have a study for us?” and “Why can’t we
come?” It is hard for me to explain to them that I have taken the
approach that Billy Graham always took, to always have another
woman in ministry present at any meeting that he had with women.
Currently, I have no women available to minister with me every
week.
In order to meet the request of these girls, as well as, to train many
more children for God’s kingdom, we hope to significantly expand
this program by enlisting and training volunteers to be the
discipleship leaders. Currently, we especially need mature Christian
women, well grounded in the Holy Bible to achieve this end.
We are using materials by NavPress, the publishing ministry of the
Navigators, an international Christian organization. Those in use
this year are:
1) The Life: A Journey With God.... a study of who God is
2) The Walk: A Journey With God... a study of how to apply your
faith
3) The Faith: A Journey With God... a study of why to believe
4) The Disciple: A Journey With God... a study of how to be like
Christ
1 and 2 are in current use and I expect we'll finish those and use 3
& 4 before the end of the school year. (If interested, you can go to
www.NavPress.com for more information on these study guides.)
The middle school in which we are piloting the program rings the
final bell at 3 PM. Discipleship class usually begins at the end of the
school day but this year we are able to start during class time at 2
PM. Typically the study will last 1 to 1.5 hours depending on the
age of the young people, transportation issues, etc. This school
does provide a van for children who stay after school for the study,
if needed.
The high school where we are working this year ends at 3:30 PM
and discipleship begins at that time and lasts 1 to 1.5 hours. In this
case, I am currently providing transportation home.
Prep time depends on how far you get with the students each week.
7th graders get through far less study than 9th graders!
Approximately 30 minutes per week (or less) is all it takes me to
read through the study questions, read the Scripture in question,
and answer the questions. It is a very basic inductive Bible study,
but as I tell the students, it is very important to answer the
questions from the passages assigned, not from your current
knowledge of the Bible, in order to get the message from the Word
that the authors are trying to convey.
I have a graduate certification in Biblical studies from Trinity
Evangelical Divinity School, but that much background is NOT
required to lead these Bible studies. As stated above, all we need
are mature Christians with several years of daily personal Bible
study who are committed to helping young Christians become
disciples of Christ and obedient to His Word. However, we do
require a one-school-year commitment (9 months) of weekly
"classes" with a few exceptions for school holidays and personal
vacation.
Also, we will expect all volunteers to submit to a background check
and provide a pastor's reference.
If you have an interest in becoming involved as a volunteer, please

internet access, please call our BASICS office at 414-372-7200.
